Designed the UX for Bullish Exchange, a regulated cryptocurrency trading platform powered by deterministic liquidity pools. Translated novel financial infrastructure into a familiar, transparent trading interface for institutional and sophisticated retail traders across desktop and mobile. The exchange launched publicly in 2021 and processed billions of dollars in trading volume.

Overview

Bullish is a regulated cryptocurrency exchange backed by Block. One, designed from the ground up for institutional and sophisticated retail traders. Unlike most crypto exchanges, Bullish uses automated market makers and deterministic liquidity pools — making the trading experience fundamentally different from traditional order-book exchanges.

My role was to translate this novel financial infrastructure into a trading interface that felt familiar enough to attract experienced traders while being transparent enough to earn trust.

Bullish desktop trading platform Desktop trading. The primary surface for active traders — live market data and an integrated depth chart, with a persistent order ticket always within reach.

The Design Challenge

Cryptocurrency exchanges are notoriously complex — full of dense data tables, ambiguous jargon, and interfaces that feel like they were designed by engineers for engineers. Bullish needed to be different: regulated, trustworthy, and genuinely usable for a sophisticated audience that expected Bloomberg-level data density with consumer-grade clarity.

Key Tensions

  • Transparency vs. Simplicity — Showing how the liquidity pool mechanics work without overwhelming users
  • Speed vs. Accuracy — Traders need to act fast, but mistakes in crypto are irreversible
  • Institutional vs. Retail — Serving both segments without building two entirely separate products

Outcome

Bullish launched publicly in 2021, became one of the most liquid crypto exchanges in the world in its first year, and processed billions of dollars in trading volume.
